SUDI

The short definition

SUDI stands for sudden unexpected death in infancy. It is the term behind every safe sleep rule on this site.

What it actually means

Dadda will meet this word on every safe sleep leaflet he opens. It is worth knowing what it is, because it explains why the sleep rules are so specific.

The six safe sleep recommendations exist to reduce the risk of SUDI. Back sleeping, a firm flat surface, a bare sleep space, head and face uncovered, room-sharing for at least the first 6 months.

  • The risk is highest in the first 7 months. That is called the critical developmental period, and around 90% of SUDI cases happen in it. That is why the rules are tightest early and loosen later.
  • No baby monitor has been proven to prevent SUDI. Some manufacturers claim otherwise. The claim is false.

Where Dadda will hear it

On safe sleep material, in hospital, and from the child health nurse. Often as "SIDS", which is the older and narrower term.

Not to be confused with

A reason to panic. This is a definition of a word, not a description of risk in his house. The safe sleep rules are the useful part, and they are short.
