Prepare a bottle
What this is for
The feed Dadda can do on his own, including the three o'clock one. Expressed milk skips the scoops.
Before Dadda starts
On the bench:
- A sterilised bottle, teat, cap and knife. Its own job.
- The tin, with its scoop inside.
- Boiled water, already cooling.
How much of each is on the tin. The tin beats this page.
A midwife will show him one. Demonstrating it in person is a health worker's job, not a website's.
The steps
- Wash your hands. Clear the bench.
- Boil fresh tap water.
- Stand it at least half an hour, until lukewarm.
- Pour the cooled water into the bottle. Water first, always.
- Level each scoop with the leveller, or the knife's back.
- Add the scoops the tin says. Scoop back in the tin, dry.
- Teat and cap on. Shake until the powder is gone.
- Shake a few drops onto the inside of your wrist. Just warm.
- Feed within the hour. Tip out what is left.
What goes wrong
- Mixing it stronger or weaker. The amount goes up as bub grows, never the strength.
- Anything but water and powder. No cereal, no sugar, no extra water.
- Hot water, off an overseas site. Here it is boiled, then cooled to lukewarm — not 70 degrees.
